A local mailbox minutes from where Olympic gold medalist Kellie Harrington grew up has been painted gold in honor of the athlete’s achievement.
Outside the Summerhill Post Office, locals walked past to see a letterbox that was transformed from green to gold by An Post as a tribute to Kellie Harrington and her home community.
The letterbox is a short distance from the Boxer’s family home at Portland Row in North Dublin city center.
An Post hoped his transformation “would bring some Tokyo gold to Dublin’s most famous streets today.”
In a Twitter post on Monday, An Post wrote, “Extend the Portland Row celebrations to our Summerhill mailbox. Send love to Kellie in Tokyo. The letterbox itself reads: “Send the celebration.” Send triumph. Send love.
Social media users shared photos of the mailbox, describing it as a “nice touch” and thanking An Post for going “above and beyond” to celebrate the achievements of the Irish Olympians.
Last week, An Post dedicated a gold box to Cork rowers Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy who were crowned Olympic champions in the men’s lightweight doubles final. A Post spokesperson said the Market Street letterboxes in Cork were a popular place for most people to do their postal business.
“What better place to celebrate the fantastic efforts of Paul and Fintan than by turning those letterboxes to gold,” he said.
