Free Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event for Union County Residents Oct 23 – Union County, New Jersey

Residents can safely dispose of common household chemicals and other special wastes at this event.

Union County, NJ – The Union County Council of Commissioners reminds residents that the next 2021 free household hazardous waste event will be held on Saturday, October 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Vo-Tech Schools on Union County campus , located at 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains. This event will be the last for 2021. The series will resume again in 2022.

Anyone in Union County can participate, regardless of their city of origin.

“The Union County Household Hazardous Waste Events provide residents with a free and convenient opportunity to remove unwanted chemicals and other potentially hazardous items from their homes and gardens and dispose of them safely,” said said the chairman of the council of commissioners, Alexander Mirabella. “It’s an easy way to make a real difference and help keep harmful substances out of the environment. “

Items accepted include household cleaners and other expired or unwanted chemicals, mercury thermostats and thermometers, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, automobile tires (limit eight per household), paint and varnish based oil (no latex paint), antifreeze, spray cans, pool chemicals, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, thinners, engine oil and oil filters, gasoline, batteries, thermostats, fluorescent bulbs (uninterrupted), mercury switches, and more.

Only materials in original or labeled containers will be accepted. No container of more than five gallons will be accepted.

Please note that latex (water based) wall paint is NOT accepted. Unwanted latex paint should be used, donated or dried in the can and discarded in the regular household garbage, without the cover. To help dry the paint, add kitty litter, newspaper, or a commercial paint hardener.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event will be held rain or shine, for Union County residents only, not for businesses. Proof of residence in Union County is required.

Union County Household Hazardous Waste events are non-contact. Participants must adhere to the following rules to avoid accidents and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus:

  • Arrival by vehicle only. No appointment accepted.
  • The driver and all passengers must wear a face cover at all times.
  • The driver and all passengers must remain in the vehicle at all times.
  • Car windows must be kept closed at all times.
  • Materials should be placed in the trunk, cargo area or platform of the truck where they can be easily identified and accessed by personnel, who will remove them.
