TISD Board of Directors approves increases

TEXARKANA, Texas – Employees at the Texarkana Independent School District will receive salary increases in the 2021-2022 compensation plan approved by the board of directors on Tuesday.

The plan includes step salary increases for teachers and a 3% bonus for all other professional, paraprofessional and auxiliary employees who receive a satisfactory performance score of 3.0 or higher on their 2020-2021 appraisal.

“After such a difficult school year, we are pleased to be able to offer these increases to our staff,” said Assistant Superintendent Autumn Thomas. “I have been amazed at the Tiger family’s ability to work under such difficult circumstances and always be able to deliver on expectations. Their work ethic and pursuit of excellence has been an inspiration. “

The council also approved an item that will increase the price of paid meals for adults, as well as a resolution requiring school crossing guards to complete a training program.

The Texas Department of Agriculture provides tips and tools for calculating the price of adult meals. TDA demands that TISD increase the prices of adult meals, but has not given details of what the increase should be.

The district is currently awaiting the publication of tariffs from the TDA and USDA and will approve the prices for adult meals once this information is provided.

The school crossing guards’ resolution requires that all school crossing guards employed by the district complete a traffic direction training program as defined by the Peace Officer Basic Curriculum.

The board also heard the extracurricular reports. Given the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2020-21 school year, the numbers reflected in the report are significantly lower than the annual average.

Eighty-seven percent of students at Texas Middle School participated in extracurricular activities ranging from athletics and performance programs to clubs and organizations. The breakdown by level was 68% participation in sixth year, 98% participation in seventh year and 97% participation in eighth year.

For Texas High School, 80% of all students participated in at least one activity with a grade 9 to 12 attendance percentage of 79%. THS offers 22 sports programs for students as well as five performance courses, six activity courses and 31 clubs and organizations in which students can participate, including UIL academics which offer opportunities in 12 academic fields.

The last item on the agenda was a review item for the district project update.

The list of summer projects is almost complete for the start of the school year. A total of 37 projects across 16 facilities were completed, as well as district-wide exterior painting, stripping and waxing of floors.

The next TISD board meeting will be on Tuesday August 17th.
